Why do we need sleep?

On average, a person will spend about one-third of their life sleeping. While many rue the need for sleep and mourn wasted potential, sleep appears to play a vital role in health and productivity.

Though scientists aren’t sure of the precise reason we sleep, certain observations support several theories regarding restoration and brain plasticity. A good night’s sleep is thought to play several functions, including:

  • Protecting immune function. Death is a possibility if you refuse to hit the hay. In fact, certain animal studies have shown complete sleep deprivation leads to a loss of all immune function and death in just weeks.
  • Allowing the body to repair itself. Many of the body’s restorative processes occur primarily or exclusively during sleep, including tissue repair, muscle growth, protein synthesis, and growth hormone release.
  • Clearing adenosine buildup. Adenosine is a waste product of cellular activity in the brain and accumulates during our waking hours. This byproduct is thought to promote feelings of tiredness. Only during sleep can we rid ourselves of enough adenosine buildup to feel alert.
  • Facilitating memory and learning. Sleep deprivation negatively affects focus and attention, making learning new information and accessing learned information more difficult. (That’s why all-nighters are never a good idea if you want to ace that next exam.)

While we don’t fully understand why we sleep, we do know the effects of not getting adequate shuteye. Chronic sleep deprivation increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and heart disease. It also affects your brain, leaving you at a greater risk of dementia, depression, and anxiety.

How much sleep do you really need?

The amount of sleep one needs varies by age. While infants and toddlers generally snooze for as long as 16 to 18 hours per day, school-age children and teens usually need about 9.5 hours per night. The average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night; however, those 60 and older generally experience shorter, lighter sleep with more waking interruptions.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 3 Americans isn’t getting the sleep they need. And despite popular belief, you can’t just catch up on rest if you’re chronically sleep deprived. Given our fast-paced, smartphone-laced culture is likely to blame, perhaps a lifestyle change is in order.

Tips for better sleep.

Clearly, sleep is important – you could literally die without it. To be the best version of yourself, there are several techniques you can try to achieve healthy sleeping patterns. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) recommends the following:

  • Don’t consume caffeine or nicotine too late in the day and avoid alcoholic beverages before bed.  
  • Exercise. 20 to 30 minutes every day a few hours before bed is best.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as taking a warm bath or shower, listening to calming music, or reading (avoid those page-turning thrillers).
  • Create the optimal sleep environment: buy blackout curtains, avoid night lights, banish electronics/screens from the bedroom, turn down the thermostat, make the bed comfortable.
  • If you can’t fall asleep, don’t just lie in bed awake. Get up and do something else, such as read or journal, until you are tired. Just no screen time.
  • Keep a schedule. You should try to fall asleep and wake up at roughly the same time every day, even on days off and holidays.
  • Seek professional help. If nothing seems to work for you, an underlying condition may be the cause. Many sleep disorders are very treatable.

In 2016 alone, an estimated 16.2 million US adults age 18 or older and 2.2 million adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 suffered from major depression.

Though psychotherapy and medication are the widely-accepted forms of treatment for major depression and related disorders, research indicates cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabis-derived compound, may have potential therapeutic effects for people suffering from depression.

Before we dive into the what and how of CBD, let’s first explore one of the most common mental illnesses in the US.

The symptoms and effects of depression.

Though the medical community and society at large have come a long way in terms of how mental illness is viewed, conditions including depression and anxiety are still stigmatized, dissuading many sufferers from seeking the medical attention they need. In fact, more than one-third of adults and twice as many adolescents never seek any form of treatment for depression. That is tragic.  

We may use “depressed” and “anxious” in everyday language, but these medical conditions aren’t the typical or normal responses to life events. One need only imagine the toll on their work schedule and social obligations.

Depression has a long list of symptoms, including:

  • Feelings of prolonged sadness, anxiety, emptiness, and hopelessness
  • Nagging feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, and loneliness
  • Irritability and anger
  • Restlessness or difficulty sitting still
  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
  • Fatigue, or unrelenting exhaustion
  • Insomnia
  • Difficulty with concentration, decision-making, and memory recall
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Suicidal thoughts and tendencies
  • Slow movement and/or speech
  • Decreased libido, or sexual desire
  • Frequent bouts of crying
  • Chronic pain, headaches, cramps, and digestive issues

Depression is closely linked to stress, a physiological state that induces chronic high levels of certain stress hormones that promote inflammation throughout the body linked to cardiovascular and immune system dysfunction. Because of this, depression sufferers have a higher risk of heart attack and contracting infectious diseases, such as influenza or pneumonia.  

People with depression may also cope with stress by overeating, leading to obesity-related diseases such as type-2 diabetes.

How can CBD help people with depression?

Cannabidiol is one of over 80 cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD does not produce the feeling of being “high”.

CBD is usually sold as an extract in the form of tinctures, sprays, ointments, and liposomal-enhanced oils, such as Colorado Hemp Oil.

There is mounting scientific evidence suggesting CBD may be useful in the treatment of a wide array of conditions, including depression and anxiety, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, cancer, and chronic pain. Below we discuss several studies dealing specifically with CBD’s potential in the treatment of depression:  

5-HT1a receptors

A review of several studies examining the potential anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects of CBD revealed cannabidiol may act on the 5-HT1A neuro-receptor, a subtype of serotonin receptor. 5-HT1A receptors are found in areas of the brain associated with mood, cognition, and memory.

The studies reviewed used animal models in which mice were subjected to stressful situations, such as swimming in a water tank from which there is no escape (forced swimming test), being forced into open spaces (elevated plus maze), and receiving electric shocks as a form of behavioral conditioning (Vogel Conflict Test). In most cases, mice dosed with CBD were more resilient under stress than those that were not.

One study even showed CBD had antidepressant-like effects in mice similar to the prescription antidepressant imipramine, an effect thought to be linked to activation of 5-HT1A receptors.

CBD and motivation

Another study examined the role of CBD on hedonic motivation, or the tendency of a person toward pleasurable versus negative or painful experiences. The study was conducted using genetically-engineered, depression-prone rats that were subjected to various tests and focused on CBD’s effects on anhedonia-like behavior.

Anhedonia, or apathy and the inability to feel pleasure, is a trademark symptom of depression. In rats, anhedonia may present as lack of movement and hesitation to explore their surroundings.

In the study, researchers conducted the novel object exploration (NOE) test, in which the rats could roam freely in an open space where an unfamiliar object was placed. Generally, these depressive-like rats exhibit avoidant, fear-based behaviors; however, the CBD-treated rats tended to explore their surroundings and venture up to the unfamiliar object without hesitation.

These findings suggest CBD may be useful in the treatment of clinical depression and other conditions associated with anhedonia.

Potential side effects of CBD.

Though doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD have been reported safe, individual tolerance levels will vary. Harsh side effects were rare, though the most common side effects reported by users are tiredness, diarrhea, and fluctuations in appetite and weight.

In some people, CBD can disrupt the breakdown of certain medications in the liver and may cause excessive drowsiness when used with other sleep-inducing supplements, like melatonin. Because each person is different, it is important to consult a physician before starting any health regimen, whether with natural or synthetic substances.

CBD for MS-related pain and spasticity  

Many people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis suffer from spasticity, an uncomfortable and frequently painful condition that includes stiffness and involuntary muscle spasms. Spasticity can be mild to severe, ranging from tightness and pain of the muscles, back, and joints to uncontrollable spasms of the arms and legs.

A review of 50 MS patients treated with a combination of THC and CBD revealed 80 percent of participants saw improvements in spasticity. Researchers concluded this combination may be a good alternative treatment for those with difficult to treat spasticity related to MS.

CBD for pain management in cancer patients

According to the National Cancer Institute, Cannabidiol has shown potential in the treatment of cancer and associated pain. Various studies have shown CBD may relieve pain through its anti-inflammatory properties and may prevent nerve issues arising from chemotherapy.

CBD may also enhance certain cancer treatments. One study involving malignant tumor cells from human nerve tissue showed that cannabidiol can boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy. CBD increases cancer cell death while leaving normal cells unharmed.   

CBD safety: side effects and dosage

Currently, there is no consensus on the best dosage of CBD in the treatment of pain, as more research is still needed. Dosages will likely vary depending on many factors, including your tolerance level and condition.

Research has concluded, however, doses of up to 1,500 mg CBD appear to be safe. Minor side effects were reported, including nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, and changes in appetite and weight.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD), a potent non-psychoactive compound extracted from hemp or marijuana, has been shown to benefit people suffering from a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, diabetes, depression, anxiety, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

One element these illnesses tend to have in common is inflammation – yet another condition a growing body of scientific research suggests CBD can fight. Perhaps the reason CBD may be beneficial for so many people is that this non-psychedelic cannabinoid may alleviate inflammation, a suspected precursor to numerous diseases.

What is inflammation?

A variety of white blood cells then spring into action: granulocytes dissolve foreign compounds, phagocytes “eat” germs and debris, B lymphocytes (B cells) produce antibodies that help destroy pathogens, and T lymphocytes (T cells) attack invaders directly and release cytokines, a variety of proteins that help orchestrate the immune response.

Acute inflammation generally resolves within a few days but can potentially become chronic, leading to numerous debilitating and life-threatening diseases if left untreated.

The problem with chronic inflammation is it often remains invisible. Internal organs, for example, lack the pain receptors found in joints and near the skin’s surface, allowing persistent internal inflammation to go undetected. Signs and symptoms are often nonexistent or, if they are present, are generic and may include fatigue, fever, and stomach pain.

A blood test can reveal the presence of chronic inflammation by measuring levels of C-reactive protein and other types of inflammatory molecules, but the results won’t tell the doctor the location or cause of the inflammation.   

The benefits of CBD for inflammation.

While more research is still needed, there is a growing body of science indicating cannabidiol can be used alone or as part of a typical treatment regimen in the prevention of and fight against a number of life-altering conditions.

Here is an overview of CBD’s effects on the inflammatory processes of just a few of these conditions:  

Cannabidiol and chronic pain.

High glucose levels set off a chain of inflammation-inducing events, including increased production of damaging free radicals, activation of key pro-inflammatory molecules, and the breakdown of the endothelial barrier, the protective layer of cells that line the inside of blood and lymphatic vessels.  

Destruction of the endothelial barrier of vessels throughout the pancreas allow free radicals and macrophages to pass freely into the pancreatic islets, the cell clusters that contain beta cells, which produce the hormone insulin. As a result, pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations increase, killing off beta cells and reducing the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin.

In one study, treatment of non-obese diabetic mice with CBD oil showed remarkable improvement in pancreatic function and a shift from pro-inflammatory activity to an anti-inflammatory response. There was a significant difference in diabetic incidence among the non-treated and CBD-treated mice groups: the former had an incidence of 86 percent, while the latter only showed an incidence of 30 percent.

Cannabidiol and depression.

Patients with major depressive disorder have been shown to have an overabundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which can stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to flood the brain with glucocorticoids, a stress hormone.

In addition to the overproduction of stress hormones, excessive inflammation causes overproduction of free radicals and oxidants, which disrupt glial cell functions and damage neurons in the brain.  

Studies show CBD may reduce such cytokine activity, reducing inflammation associated with depression.

CBD’s anti-psychotic effects are likely the result of activation of 5-HT1A receptors, a sub-type of serotonin receptors.

While the research shows CBD can help calm inflammation, no concrete dosages have been established for humans by the medical community.

  1. Legal status of CBD oil in your state. Despite the numerous scientific studies demonstrating the possible health benefits of cannabidiol and the unlikelihood of producing psychoactive effects, the federal government has classified cannabis and all cannabis-derived compounds, including cannabidiol, as Schedule I drugs, deeming them illegal.

However, the use of marijuana or other cannabis products for medical purposes is legal in 29 states, of which 9 allow recreational use. In 17 other states, CBD products with no or low THC content are allowed, while all other cannabis products remain illegal. Only Idaho, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas align with federal law, prohibiting the use of all cannabis products. Before purchasing CBD oil, make sure you are complying with your state’s laws.    

CBD oil may be all the rage, but before you hop onto the bandwagon, do your research – some cannabidiol extracts are better than others. Once you do find the CBD oil you feel confident in, remember to take it slow, as everyone’s tolerance level and needs are different.

What is CBD?
The cannabis plant has over 400 naturally-occurring chemical compounds, of which over 80 are classified as cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD) and the more well-known THC, or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol. CBD is likely the most abundant cannabinoid, composing about 40 percent of cannabis resin.

CBD is sold in a variety of forms, including tinctures, sprays, oils, edibles, and topical creams; though, most people purchase CBD as an oil.

Though more research is needed, some scientific studies have shown CBD may have certain healing properties and can be used in the treatment of chronic pain,
inflammation, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and anxiety, just to name a few.

What is the difference between CBD and THC?
The main difference between CBD and THC is their psychoactive effect, or their mind-altering abilities. While THC impairs mental and physical functions and can produce a state of euphoria, CBD does not produce feelings of being “high”. In fact, CBD has been shown to reduce the intoxicating effects of THC.

Though scientific studies have shown THC to have therapeutic effects, the cannabis compound can increase the physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety, induce temporary psychosis, and impair short-term memory and motor functions.

CBD, on the other hand, does not negatively affect memory or coordination, is thought to have antipsychotic effects, and is shown to improve anxiety symptoms, especially in those with generalized social anxiety disorder.

Because CBD does not produce mind-altering effects, CBD oil can be used in everyday situations, including social, academic, and professional environments.

What are the possible health benefits of CBD oil?
Though more research is needed, scientific studies have shown CBD may have a
number of therapeutic effects, including:

  • Preventing seizures. Though research regarding CBD’s impact on epilepsy is still in its infancy, the American Epilepsy Society says the outcomes are promising. One such study showed an oral dose of 2 to 5mg of CBD per day, in addition to existing epilepsy medications, resulted in an overall reduction in seizures by nearly 37 percent per month.
  • Reducing Anxiety. CBD may help people with anxiety disorders manage their systems by affecting the way cell receptors react to serotonin, a molecule that regulates everything from mood and sleep to bowel movements. Other ways CBD may help relieve anxiety include diminishing psychological stress and reducing the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as rapid heartbeat and nausea.
  • Relieving pain. CBD may help alleviate pain by acting as an anti-inflammatory and affecting brain receptors responsible for pain perception. The National Institute of Health is studying CBD’s potential to reduce pain caused by arthritis, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis (MS), muscle pain, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Protecting nerve cells. CBD has neuroprotective properties and may help improve the quality of life for people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s disease, and alcohol-induced neurodegeneration.
  • Enhancing cancer treatments. In addition to relieving the side effects of cancer treatment, including nausea, pain, and loss of appetite, CBD may also aid in killing cancer cells, decreasing tumor growth, and preventing metastasis, or the spread of cancer to other areas of the body.

What is the appropriate dosage of CBD oil?
Though a wide variety of doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD have been reported safe, individual tolerance levels will vary. Harsh side effects were either rare or unobserved in people using CBD, though the most common side effects reported by users are tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite and weight.
Is CBD oil legal?
Since CBD is a chemical extracted from marijuana, a Schedule I drug, CBD oil is
deemed illegal by the federal government. At the state level, however, CBD is legal
where recreational and/or medical marijuana is allowed as well as in states that have approved CBD products with low THC levels.
